Tours of Clonalis House
Historic Clonalis House is the ancestral home of the O’Conor family, descendants of Ireland’s last High Kings and traditional Kings of Connacht. Located outside the town of Castlerea in Co. Roscommon, the secluded 700-acre estate has been in the continuous possession of the family for over 1,500 years and is still regarded by many as the last remnant of the ancient Kingdom of Connacht.
The present house is a Victorian Italianate mansion and is home to a museum that includes the harp of O’Carolan (last of the wandering Irish bards) as well as letters from the likes of Daniel O’Connell, Parnell and Gladstone. There is also an original facsimile of King Charles 1's death warrant complete with Oliver Cromwell’s signature and the last known brehon law judgement dating from the 16th century.
