Roundwood and District Historical Society received Community Monuments Funding in 2022 to prepare a conservation plan for Castlekevin, Annamoe, Co. Wicklow. This Anglo-Norman castle is important in terms of the story it tells of late medieval Irish history which, although peaceful today, visible as a grassy mound, would have been a bustling settlement in medieval times.
Castlekevin was the epicentre of a ferocious struggle between Gaelic Irish and Norman Colonists in the Wicklow Mountains. This Heritage Week event, hosted by Fin Dwyer of the Irish History Podcast will showcase the fascinating story of the rise of Castlekevin before charting its long and bloody battle for survival as it witnessed the chronic struggles of Irish tribes to recover their tribal independence from the Norman colonists.
Come along to this event to hear short presentations of our work to date from a team of specialists including archaeologists, the local community, historians, an ecologist, LiDAR and the results of the geophysical survey. Although the history of the site has been covered over the years there has not been a scientific or archaeological survey of the site ever completed, so come to this event to find out how we are working as a team to try to shine a light on this hidden heritage.
