Abbeyleix is gaining a reputation as a leading biodiversity friendly town and is home to a number of initiatives aimed at providing improved habitat for wildlife in general and pollinators in particular. Central to this is our hay meadow and grass management project which is seeing some of our public and private grassland areas being managed on both annual and also shorter 4-6 week cutting cycles. Our efforts have been acknowledged with a regional Local Authority Pollinator Award in 2021.

Abbeyleix Tidy Towns will host an outdoor event for Heritage Week on the grounds of St Michael and All Angels to tell the story behind this project. Dr Fiona MacGowan, our resident botanist, will be on hand to set the scene and to identify some of the key species in the grassland swards.

Our partners in the Laois Offaly Wildlife Trust will showcase their power scythe which will be used to cut the meadow in this beautiful location in the shadows of the church. We will also bring along one of our Austrian Scythes to give a flavour of how the hay would have been cut in the old days.

Finally, as a nod to the Power of Words Poetry Festival that is happening in Abbeyleix that weekend, we will aim to recite a verse or two in celebration of biodiversity.
