Leitrim Women Through Time
The "Leitrim Women Through Time" Pop-up Leitrim Women's Museum returns for Heritage Week on Saturday 16th August! This temporary museum of Leitrim women’s history includes the display of the “Leitrim Women Through Time: 1850 – 1950” travelling museum exhibition, which is accompanied by a presentation of objects which celebrate rural women’s history; with examples from women’s work inside and outside the home, women’s craft, and women’s personal lives. Included in the display are a wide variety of objects from everyday rural women’s lives including an antique Singer sewing machine, spinning wheel, butter churn, washboard, Clones lace, Irish linen, and vintage household books and women’s magazines.
The "Leitrim Women Through Time" project would love for people to bring along their own photographs, documents, and objects linked to local women’s history to the Museum to be recorded by our community heritage project. We will scan, copy, and photograph all shared information and objects to add to the project archive for preservation for the future.
No advance booking is required - this is a free drop-in event during Drumkeerin Old Fair Day, with everyone welcome!
"Leitrim Women Through Time" is a collaborative community heritage project managed by WCI - North Leitrim Women's Centre and Scéal Heritage Consultancy. Our women's history initiative is based in Leitrim, and we celebrate and preserve the stories and experiences of ordinary rural women from the county. These stories are often overlooked in history, and we hold events and activities each year to highlight them and to collect information for a future archive of Leitrim women's history. Our project was supported in 2022, 2023, 2024 & 2025 by The Heritage Council Community Heritage Grant Scheme.
Please note that some discreet filming of the Museum and its adult visitors will take place on the day to form a record of the event.
