Kilfenora has a long history as a market; in 1618, a charter to hold a Thursday market, and two fairs a year, was made to John Sterne; it was one of only two places in Co. Clare to be awarded a market charter before 1650, the other being the county town of Ennis. In the hinterland of the village, the name of the prominent early medieval cashel of 'Ballykinvaraga', deriving from 'Cathair bhaile cinn Mhargaidh', meaning 'fort of the head market', suggests that the market heritage of Kilfenora is even more ancient. Although the market had declined by the early 1800s, in 1837 cattle and sheep fairs were still held in June and October, and the culture prevails until the present day, with a number of annual sales in the co-operative farmer's mart.

Janet Kavenagh of E-Whizz bikes will lead a cycle tour around the market sites within and in the hinterland of Kilfenora, a short and enjoyable route over easy terrain, as part of Heritage Week 2022.

This event is run with support from Clare County Council and the Heritage Council.

This tour will last for approximately 1 hour, and is suitable for children from the age of 10. Please bring your own bicycles and helmets, or contact E-Whizz at info@e-whizz.com for bike reservation queries
