Talk: Archaeological Excavations at Disert Co. Donegal 2019-2024
Come along for a great evening and find out about the archaeological excavations that took place at Disert between 2019 and 2024. Disert is a ritual pilgrim landscape in the parish of Inver, Co. Donegal. It incorporates early ecclesiastical enclosures, penitential cairns, a holy well dedicated to St Colmcille, a post-medieval altar, and a cillín (children’s graveyard). Disert was reputedly founded by St Colmcille in the 6th century AD, but evidence from excavations suggests that the use of the site also extends back into prehistory. Disert is still important today for religious devotion.
Dr Fiona Beglane of ATU and the Disert Heritage Group will be giving a talk and presentation about the results of the excavations. This will be followed by traditional music by Raphael Meehan and Friends. All are welcome at this free event.
