Taking a tour of Parnell Square is like entering a time capsule. Once known as Rutland Square, the oldest of Dublin’s Georgian Squares and the only one on the North Side of the city, it was built to showcase the homes of the great and the good of the late eighteenth century, including the Gardiner and Charlemont families.

During the 19th century, its buildings became more commercial in nature, with large numbers of solicitors, doctors and auctioneers locating their offices there. Rutland Square, as it was then known, also became the home of a number of cultural and political associations, including the Gaelic League.

Join Dublin City Council Historian-in-Residence Elizabeth Kehoe for a walking tour of Dublin’s Finest Square. There will be some of you who will disagree with that statement, but by the time you have finished the tour she hopes you will love this square as much as she does – this tour will be more about people than buildings and statues but there will be plenty of information about those too!
