Open Day at Ardroe Thatch Cottage – by appointment only
Visit the oldest recorded thatched cottage in Donegal as recorded in the Hearth Money Roll in 1665.
This cottage was built by Michael McElwee's family 7-8 generations ago and was restored by Michael in 1985, with every feature of its structure retaining its character.
The cottage is unusual in that it is one and half storeys when the majority of thatch cottages were single storey.
The entrance to the laneway leading to the house has two traditional round pillars with wooden gates. The cottage boasts of a front garden surrounded by large pine trees which are well over 100 years old and two sycamores which are over 200 years old.
The interior of the cottage consists of a large traditional kitchen (incl. living room) with a large open hearth fire and the original crane from early days. There is also a traditional flag floor, a traditional dresser with plates and bowls from bygone days. The parlour (sitting room) is furnished with Georgian furniture. There are two bedrooms upstairs and a small semi modern kitchen done in the traditional style. All this under the thatch roof!
Overall the cottage has many architectural features which Michael will expand on and you will certainly leave with lasting memories of this beautiful, traditional thatch cottage.
