As a preview to an upcoming book, this special National Heritage Week exhibition explores the rich history, natural beauty, built heritage, culture, and folklore of Lough Corrib – the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland. Both the exhibition and the book – created by local historian and author William Henry – have been commissioned by Corrib Beo to promote greater awareness and appreciation of this remarkable lake.

About Lough Corrib
Lough Corrib separates the fertile limestone plains of East Galway from the lake-strewn bogs and rugged mountains of Connemara to the west. Formed at the end of the last Ice Age, it spans about 44,000 acres and stretched up to 13 km at its widest point supporting one of Ireland’s largest wetland areas. Often described as an inland sea, its indented shores and ever-changing scenery have captivated and inspired generations.

About William Henry
William Henry is a historian, archaeologist, and popular author from Galway city. He has written dozens of books and guides on various aspects of the history, folklore and culture of Galway, and hundreds of ‘Talking History’ articles for the Galway Independent.

About Corrib Beo
Corrib Beo is a voluntary environmental group established in 2019 in Galway to promote the social, economic, and environmental well-being of the Corrib region. It focuses on fostering a sense of community pride and care for Lough Corrib and its surrounding area.

The exhibition will take place in the Education Room on the top floor of the Musuem, which is accessible by stairs or public lift.
