Limerick lace pop-up exhibition

22 - 23 August, 10am - 4pm

  • Lumen Street Theatre
  • 16 Roches Street, Limerick
  • V94 VY22
  • Co. Limerick

For this year’s Heritage Week, we have decided to bring our lace out of the museum setting and on to the main street, so that people who are not frequent museum goers or are unaware of Limerick’s lace making history and traditions can come upon our exhibition accidentally. We want to demonstrate that lace making is very much alive and embedded in the contemporary life of Limerick.

For two days, Friends of Lace Limerick will be taking over the space at 16 Roches Street, in the centre of Limerick city, and use it to display some of their heirloom pieces, but also some contemporary work. There will be lace making demonstrations, video projections, interactive pieces, and we will offer visitors the opportunity to try out a few stitches themselves. The public will get the opportunity to chat with the lacemakers, get information on the rich history of Limerick lace, on lace making classes and workshops and lace identification.

Friends of Lace are a Limerick-based group of lace makers formed in 2017 with the mission to bring Limerick lace back to public attention by contributing to the preservation, documentation and research on existing artefacts in museums and private collections, creating teaching resources and supporting novel interpretations and uses of Limerick lace. The group are working closely with Limerick Museum and other cultural organisations in Limerick to enhance the visibility of lace making as a traditional craft with great potential.
Everybody is welcome. The event is free and booking is not required.
