Launch of 'Ogham Stones of County Mayo' Booklet
Join us for the Heritage Week launch of the 'Ogham Stones of County Mayo'. This richly illustrated booklet features information on the 12 recorded ogham stones from Mayo, along with images, 3D renders and drawings of each stone.
An ogham stone is typically a standing stone, with an inscription in the ogham script, usually located on the edge or angle of the stone. This script or writing system was created sometime before the 5th century AD to represent the sounds of an early form of the Irish language and used initially to carve short inscriptions on stone.
This booklet was produced as part of the Mayo Ogham project, co-ordinated by Dr Nora White, on behalf of the Mayo Heritage Office, and supported by the Heritage Council.
