Launch of Killoughey Graveyard Map

We invite you to come along and join us for the unveiling of a new graveyard layout map in the beautiful old historic Killoughey graveyard outside of Mountbolus, Co. Offaly. The layout map is designed to assist visitors coming to the graveyard to research or find specific graves. Many of the headstones are now illegible due to weathering and erosion, some have fallen so the map will be an aid to direct people to the grave or headstone that they are seeking. We have many visitors from abroad and nationally seeking ancestral graves so the map will be a great source of information for them. All of the headstones in the graveyard have been recorded and documented in book form to give further information on those buried there, books will be available on the day. Also on the day we will have the unveiling of a plaque in the Church ruins in memory of the "Killoughey Martyrs" who perished on Christmas morning in 1651 when the Church was surrounded and burned down by Cromwellian soldiers. There will be a prayer service and a blessing of the graveyard at 2pm before the unveiling of the sign.
