This talk and tour is part of the Old Graveyard Conservation Plan 2025 project in Ferns, one of the most important religious and political sites in the south east in medieval times. It is a community driven initiative which engaged a project team (including an archaeologist, a built heritage specialist and an ecologist) to help us set out a route map in how to conserve, maintain and enhance the natural, archaeological and built heritage of this historic graveyard. The project team will share what they have learned from the survey and plan to date.
Bring along a picnic: Those who come along on the day are invited to bring refreshments which can be enjoyed, picnic style, in the unique setting of this historic graveyard. The picnic will take place after the talk and tour and will give members of the public an opportunity to ask questions and give feedback on the project.
Following the picnic – there will be a brief guided walking tour focusing on the medieval history of the site. Hear stories of miracle working saints, Gaelic kings and Norman knights in the Ancient Capital of Leinster.
Transport: Ferns is served very well by regular public transport. The south bound bus stop is situated just outside the old graveyard. Please visit Wexford Bus and Bus Eireann websites for timetable details
We observe the principles of ‘Leave No Trace’
