Skills Exchange Morning: Tool Maintenance & the Art of Peening
Discover the ancient craft of peening—the traditional technique of maintaining a scythe blade by drawing out the metal with the strike of a hammer. This hands-on skills exchange, led by Chris Hayes, offers a unique opportunity to learn essential tool maintenance practices that have been passed down through generations.
Hosted in collaboration with the Kilkenny Traveller Horse Project, the morning will also be a chance to share stories and traditions around meadows, haymaking, and horses—a gathering of heritage, skill, and community spirit.
All are welcome—whether you're curious about scything, passionate about traditional crafts, or simply interested in connecting over shared stories and skills.to develop a community of practice around the tradition of late haymaking in Kilkenny City, fostering collaboration between diverse groups, including local residents, landowners, conservationists, and the Traveller community. By reviving and sharing traditional skills such as scything and meadow management, the project will promote the long-term conservation of semi-natural grasslands in urban landscapes .
