“Heroes and Ghosts” - tells the fascinating story of Larry Slattery, from Littleton, who became the first prisoner of war and the longest serving prisoner of war in World War 2. An RAF airman, his plane was shot down over German waters in the first air raid attack of the war. What follows is Larry’s amazing journey through prisoner of war camps. Here, he met with adversity but he showed tremendous resilience to overcome all challenges. Following his liberation in May 1945, the next chapter of Larry’s life unfolded. This involved life in London, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a second spell in Germany! Following his early death in 1972, Larry was honoured in a remarkable way by his ex-prisoner of war comrades.
While all this drama was taking place in Larry’s life, life for his family continued as best it could at home in Littleton. Follow their journey as they stress over Larry’s wellbeing, listening to wartime speeches and a radio interview from Larry while being held prisoner. A journey which culminates with Larry’s joyful return to Littleton in May 1945.
Please join us at the Derrynaflan Theatre in The Horse and Jockey Hotel on Tuesday 20th August at 7.30pm. Through narrative, video and a captivating performance of Larry Slattery’s life by Christy Clancy, former principal of Littleton NS, we aim to bring the life of Larry Slattery to as big an audience as possible.
