The History of Lohort Castle, Cecilstown, Mallow, Co. Cork
Enjoy a fascinating talk about the history of Lohort Castle which was built in the reign of King John about 1210. It is over 80 feet high with walls 10 feet thick at the base. Although an Anglo/Norman structure, it became the stronghold of the MacCarthys during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was subsequently owned by The Earls of Egmont and was partially burned in the early 20th Century. By kind permission of Mr. Michael Healy, Lohort Castle's present owner.
The talk will be given by Chairman of the Castlemagner Historical Association Desmond Sharp-Bolster who is also a member of Historic Houses of Ireland.
Please note: The old formal gate is not used any more. The entrance is from a passage out of the village of Cecilstown and there is a gate half way down that passage way. It will be opened about half an hour before the start
