The Heritage Team at Limerick City and County Council is delighted to invite you to a guided tour celebrating the rich built and cultural heritage of Foynes.

Explore the rich architectural history of Foynes with the Wonder Wander Walking Trails, created by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage in collaboration with the Limerick City and County Council. The trail invites you to discover the vibrant streetscape of the Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs) in the heart of Foynes. The trail celebrates the unique architectural heritage and sense of place, offering a chance to explore the diverse history and Foynes foundations.

The tour will continue with a guided group tour of the Flying Boat and Maritime Museum. This museum, located in the original Foynes Airport terminal building, tells the story of Foynes’ pivotal role in transatlantic aviation the 1930s and 1940s. The museum also showcases the maritime history of the surrounding estuary with panoramic views. The tour will include a demonstration of making Irish Coffee, which was first created at the airport terminal here.

The event will conclude with the launch of the upcoming built heritage lecture series, “The Heritage of Limerick and the Shannon”. The lecture series will focus on the relationship between the Shannon and Limerick, in terms of both natural and built heritage. Exploring this relationship and its development through history puts a focus on the importance of the Shannon estuary as a natural landscape feature and heritage asset.

Join us in celebrating the history and heritage of Foynes!
