This illustrated presentation will focus on the ruins of the thirteenth-century Greatconnell Abbey (SMR KD023-016---) and associated eighteenth-century graveyard site (SMR KD023-016001). Community interest has been reignited following recent archaeological surveys around the site. The surveys show that the fragmentary ruins of the Augustinian priory sit within an extensive deserted medieval settlement (SMR KD023-016004-). Keen to ensure that the site does not fall out of local knowledge, and to enhance the information available to the community, the project team achieved Heritage Council funding to produce a Conservation Management Plan for the site. The Plan will provide a framework under which future actions will be undertaken to manage change, and the conservation of the site from both a cultural and natural heritage perspective. This presentation will outline the work to date and plans for the future.
