
Grace O'Malley's Visit to Ormond Castle
Join Ormond Castle Guide, Bethany Locke Murphy, as she follows in the footsteps of Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley, head of the of the O'Maille dynasty in the West of Ireland, who visited Ormond Castle in Carrick-on-Suir, home of Thomas (Black Tom) Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond (1531-1614).
There, in April 1593, Grace obtained a letter of introduction from the powerful Earl to the Queen's Secretary of State, William Cecil (Lord Burghley), which paved the way for her famous meeting with his cousin, Queen Elizabeth at Greenwich Palace in July 1593.
