Heritage Walk Kilshannig

The Historic Church and Graveyard at Kilshannig, Maharees

17 August, 2pm - 5:15pm

  • Kilshannig Graveyard
  • Kilshannig
  • Co. Kerry

Join us in an expert-led exploration of the historic church and graveyard at Kilshannig. Recently accepted on the Heritage Council's Adopt a Monument Scheme, we look forward to an afternoon of talks, walks and social gathering and to exploring our foundations at this important site. Our event will commence at 2pm with a blessing of the graveyard by Fr Gene O'Donnell. We will then have a talk by Laurence Dunne (Laurence Dunne Archaeology and author of Archaeological Survey, Kilshannig Graveyard, 2012) on the origins and archaeology of the site. At 3pm, Martin Lynch (author of the Land and People of Maharees and Castlegregory 1560-1960) will present the local history of the area. At 4pm, Ger Scollard of Irish Wildlife Trust (Kerry) and Malgorzata (Gosia) Horajska (Kerry Geo) will lead a walk and talk on the geology of the site and how it forms the basis for a diverse eco-system. We will continue the conversation then with refreshments at The Green Room Bar. Interested participants should know that the grounds of the graveyard are uneven and space will be tight for this event. Participants can attend for individual talks as preferred. Please register your interest in attending by emailing mahareesconservation@gmail.com as places will be limited and we expect high demand. Please dress for the weather and the terrain!
