Explore the Seashore

15 August, 12:30pm - 2pm

  • Gearhies
  • Co. Cork County

Join us for a two part event on the shore at Gearhies on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula from 12:30pm-2pm. For families, we have an event exploring the beach and rock pools to find as many sea creatures and seaweeds as possible.  This fun and educational family event will be led by the ever enthusiastic Dolf D'Hondt (campaigner, diver, chair of the Fair Seas Steering Committee and local Coastwatch Coordinator) and Julia Cooper (marine expert and underwater photographer).

Meanwhile adults can enjoy learning about seaweeds with Frances Gallagher (aquatic biologist). She will show some of the wide range of species that grow in the inter-tidal area, how seaweeds form distinct zones on the rocks, which marine algae are most edible and tips on how to cook with them.

Note: the terrain is quite rough at low tide. Wellie boots or beach/aqua shoes with soles that provide extra grip on slippery surfaces are recommended.

This event is free but advance booking is required. Booking via Eventbrite

This event is part of the Ellen Hutchins Festival 15th-23rd August
