Tyrrellspass Green

We will meet on the village green in Tyrrellspass and walk a short distance to Cloncrow Raised Bog.

George Smith is a renowned ecologist who specialises in Raised Bog Ecology. George will identify the many highly specialised plants on the bog and highlight the importance of conserving this unique and vanishing habitat. We will learn how our peatlands originated and how successful rewetting and regeneration is helping to mitigate the harmful effects of excessive carbon in the atmosphere. Our trip to the bog will be followed by a guided tour of the historic village of Tyrrellspass focusing on its rich built and cultural environment. St. Sinian's Church, the legacy of the Countess Jane of Belvedere, Belvedere Orphanage, Imogen Sturart's sculpture, Tyrrellspass Castle are among the many treasures in this tiny village.

Raised Bogs are Wetland Areas. Suitable footwear and clothing is essential. This event is not suitable for small children or pet animals. Be prepared to go ankle deep in places.

Walking on Raised Bog is moderately taxing.
