Join Kerry county archaeologist Dr Michael Connolly and museum educator Jemma O'Connell this Heritage Week for an update on Dig Tralee, season 2. Dig Tralee is a major community archaeology project that explores Knockanacuig, a prehistoric monument complex on the outskirts of Tralee, County Kerry. The aim of the project is to explore this ancient monument and uncover the role it might have played in the origins of Tralee. Dig Tralee began in 2022 with a two-week excavation and continued in 2023 throughout the month of July. Knockanacuig was once an enclosure of significant size and height that commanded views of the surrounding area for miles around.

The excavation in 2022 showed that the site was even older than originally thought, and that it had been in continuous use since the early Neolithic (New Stone Age). This could well be where the town of Tralee began, long before the Normans arrived and established an urban centre. But now, as the modern town encroaches on all sides, the landscape context in which the monument site is being lost bit by bit. Dig Tralee provides a unique opportunity to find out more about the site, to reinstate its prominence in the history of the town, and to connect people today with the town's earliest inhabitants thousands of years ago. Last year's dig pointed the way towards several intriguing lines of enquiry and, subsequently, a much larger area of the site was opened up for archaeological investigation this season.

This evening event is your chance to watch a short film showcasing Dig Tralee 2022 and get an update from the excavator Dr. Michael Connolly on what has been found this summer. Following the film and talk there is a Q & A and you can have a chat with volunteer co-ordinator Jemma O'Connell to find out how to get involved. Dig Tralee is an initiative of Kerry County Council, who is responsible for the excavation, and Kerry County Museum who looks after volunteer and community engagement. Dig Tralee is supported by the Heritage Council of Ireland and Creative Ireland. This evening event during National Heritage Week is supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under the Regional Museum Night-time Economy Scheme.
