The original foundations of the Custom House were laid in the 1780s, but in the Custom House’s story, the topic of foundations comes up and up again.
The foundations of a local government of Ireland were cemented here in the 1800s.
The foundations of a brand new state free from British rule were laid here in 1921.
The foundations of a modern Department of Health were laid here in 1948.
