Cork Jewish Heritage - A guided musical walk

13 August, 11am - 12:15pm

Ruti Lachs

  • Co. Cork City

In the late 1800s, a Jewish community formed in Cork City, which grew to its zenith in the 1930s and then gradually diminished until the synagogue closed in 2016. Ruti Lachs, musician and member of the new Cork Jewish Community, will guide you on a walk for just over an hour, taking in the historic Jewish sites in Cork City, telling stories of the old community, and introducing you to the music, the traditions and the culture of the religious Jews who made their home in Cork a hundred and thirty years ago. There will be plenty of time for questions during the walk. The meeting venue will be shared with registered participants in advance.

Ruti has been researching the old community (the Cork Hebrew Congregation) through interviews with locals and with ex-Cork residents now scattered worldwide. Her research was collated into two documentary videos, Cork Jewish Culture Virtual Walk (which won a National Heritage Week Award in 2020) and Memories of a Cork Jewish Childhood.

Ruti is a member of local music group the Fresh Air Collective, and formerly Pop-Up Klezmer, and will be joined on the walk by other musicians and community members.

Places are limited, so booking is essential.
