Take a walk along quiet country lanes to visit and experience some of Clontuskert's many ringforts. Ringforts or fairy forts were circular enclosures dating from 400 to 1000 AD and are the most common Irish monument but how much do we know about them ?
Clontuskert is home to over 100 ringforts. They are often located in clusters and on rises of land which command a good view. The typical enclosure would contain a house or outhouses made of wooden posts and wattle and daub. Some ringforts had two ditches surrounding them. In later times the ringforts would sometimes be used as burial places especially for unbaptised children. There are also many myths and folklore about ringforts.
