Blacksod - Military Sites Walking Tour

This special walking tour will capture several military sites on the headland of Glosh-Blacksod.

The tour will encompass several defensive coastal sites including a local promontory fort, a Napoleonic era Signal Tower, a WWII look out post and 'Éire' aerial sign (LOP60) and Blacksod Lighthouse with its links to D-Day.

The military history of the area will be further illustrated through shared local stories of of the Spanish Armada, piracy and trade, the direct impacts of WWI on the area and WWII history including stories of plane crash landings, war tragedies and U-boat sightings on the peninsula and the direct impacts of the battle of the Atlantic.

This one-off special tour will take place on Sunday the 21st of August. The walking tour will start at Blacksod Lighthouse at 10am and will encompass a 6km walk/hike. The route is mostly on local roads however sections will cross rough mountainous terrain and walking boots are advised. The walking tour will take approximately two hours and will finish at Blacksod Lighthouse where carparking and refreshments are available.
