The Donegal LGBTQ+ Heritage project was founded January 2023 and is aiming to gather previously untold, hidden histories and personal stories related to LGBTQ+ community and allies connected with Donegal. We are welcoming contributions and participation from the community to help us build a collection.

This event will provide an opportunity to talk to our team, learn more about the project and how individuals/groups might be able to participate or contribute. We are grateful for funding from the Heritage Council of Ireland that will help us carry out a number of Oral History interviews as part of the project.

This event will include a talk by Dr. Brian Lacey that will look primarily at the situation in Ireland before 1634 when the only anti-LGBTQ+ Law was ever passed in Ireland as part of our colonial history. As well as being a valued member of our team, Brian is a qualified Heritage Practitioner having spent 49 years as a professional archaeologist and medieval historian.

He is the author of over 15 books including 'Terrible Queer Creatures: homosexuality in Irish history', as well as many research papers and popular publications. Brian was a gay rights activist in Derry (and to a lesser extend Donegal) in the 60's, 70's and 80's. For about 5 years he was a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the UK- and Ireland- wide ‘Outing the Past’ LGBTQ+ history festival. Brian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his presentations.

Limited places: booking essential via Eventbrite.
