William Beswick was Head Gardener at Fota House, Cork, from 1901 to 1915. This exhibition explores the life and work of the Beswick family - gardeners, sailors and soldiers.

William Beswick, born in Cheshire, worked at Bessborough House, Cork, for the Pike family during the 1880s. He them moved back to the UK to work on estates in Wales and London before returning to Ireland where his last major gardening appointment was at Fota House and Gardens. His three sons served in WW1. His eldest son, Bill, served on the Q-Ships at Cobh in 1915/16. His youngest son, Charlie, who went to school in Cork city and studied at Kew Gardens, died on the Western Front in 1917.
