An illustrated talk by Dr. Ruth McManus, (Associate Professor, School of History & Geography, DCU), on the background and context of the development of Ireland's first major public housing initiative.

In response to the critical problem of substandard living conditions and overcrowding in Dublin city, the new Irish State embarked on an initiative to provide housing for workers. The Dublin Corporation Housing Scheme at Marino was influenced by the garden suburb housing policy in the UK, and building commenced in 1924. The talk will include maps, plans and background information on the development of Marino housing, and its influence on Irish housing planning.
