Carleton In His Own Country

Carleton in His Own Country explores the cultural and literary heritage of William Carleton (1794–1869) through some of the places associated with his life and writing.

Born near Clogher in County Tyrone, Carleton drew deeply on the people, traditions and landscapes he encountered. His writing provides a vivid record of nineteenth-century rural life, and many of the places associated with him can still be visited and appreciated today.

For this project, the William Carleton Society has brought together a selection of locations that have a particular connection with Carleton. Some were important in his own life, while others feature in, or have associations with, his stories and poetry. The project is centred principally on County Tyrone but also includes locations in County Monaghan, reflecting the wider geographical landscape connected with Carleton and his work.

Through film, narration and the landscape itself, we hope to encourage viewers to look again at these familiar places and discover the stories and literary heritage associated with them. The project also seeks to introduce William Carleton and his work to new audiences and to encourage a greater appreciation of this important aspect of our shared cultural heritage.
