Women, Money & Place – Arklow

Join us for a free, welcoming event exploring 100 years of women's economic lives in Arklow through local history, photographs, census records and community stories.

Programme

10:30am–11:00am – Local History Exhibition
A rolling exhibition featuring photographs, mapped 1926 Census records and local stories displayed on a large screen. Visitors are welcome to browse before the workshop begins.

11:00am–1:00pm – Women, Money & Place Storytelling Workshop

11:00am–11:30am – From "Above the Shop" to Financial Independence
Beginning with the 1926 Census, mapped along Arklow's Main Street, we'll explore how families lived and worked in the town a century ago. Discover the important economic role women played in fishing households, where many managed family finances and made day-to-day decisions while their husbands were at sea. The talk follows the changing opportunities available to women through the twentieth century, from local industries such as Arklow Pottery to wider changes in education, employment, legal rights and financial independence.

11:30am–1:00pm – Guided Storytelling Collage Workshop
Led by local artist Yvonne Power, participants will create a personal collage inspired by the themes explored in the talk, reflecting on their own memories, family history and sense of place. Through images, words and storytelling, each collage becomes a creative response to Arklow's shared heritage and women's changing lives across generations.

1:00pm–1:30pm – Refreshments and an opportunity to view the exhibition and continue the conversation.

Designed primarily for adults. Children are welcome when accompanied by a parent or guardian, but please note that both the talk and storytelling workshop are intended for an adult audience.
