This event will combine a short visit to the cemetery to outline the process of a recent survey followed by an illustrated talk in Nobber Heritage Centre by archaeological geophysicist Kevin Barton.

The recently restored fifteenth-century medieval belfry tower in St John’s Old Cemetery was an addition to a much older twelfth-century church which ceased to exist in the late 1700s. A recent non-invasive topographical survey of the cemetery was undertaken by community volunteers under the guidance of Kevin Barton (Landscape and Geophysical Services) to see if any remnants of the twelfth-century church foundations survive beneath the current graveyard surface.

In order to systematically plan and explore for evidence of a building, an understanding of the layout and dimensions of known churches of the period in Ireland is important. The talk will review some of the visible and excavation evidence from other locations in Ireland that have led to initial steps in non-invasive exploration in the graveyard. The results from the Nobber survey will be presented and discussed in terms of possible future work.
