Join local historian Gerry Burke for a fascinating guided walking tour of the medieval town of Athenry as part of Athenry Walled Towns Day 2026. This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Ireland’s best-preserved medieval towns and learn about its rich history, heritage and surviving town defences.
Beginning outside Athenry Castle, Gerry will guide participants through the historic streets and along sections of the town walls, sharing stories of medieval life, the development of the town, and the people who shaped its history.
A special feature of this year’s tour will be an overview of the 2026 Capital Works Programme on Athenry Town Walls, providing insight into the conservation works currently taking place and the importance of protecting this nationally significant monument for future generations. These works are funded by The Heritage Council and Galway County Council.
Please wear suitable clothing and shoes.
