Terryglass has a close link with Co. Laois. It is because of these links that we travel to Laois on 23rd August to try an understand a little more of our heritage. Who were the people who through centuries have influenced the built heritage, the history, the folklore, that we have grown up with.
Terryglass Monastery in Co. Tipperary was founded in 548 by St Columba, (Colum), one of the 12 Apostles of Ireland. He was a descendant of Crimthainn, King of Leinster.
Aed ua Crimthainn, abbot and coarb of Terryglass, heir of St Columba, was the chief Scribe of the Book of Leinster, written in Terryglass in the 12th Century, was also from Laois.
In 845 the Rock of Dunamase was attacked by the Vikings and the abbot of Terryglass , Aed son of Dub da Chrich, was killed there
Saint Canice was another of the 12 apostles of Ireland and founded Aghaboe monastery and visitng the Abbey will allow us a visual of what Terryglass Abbey may have looked like
