Undercover Cork's Kilmainham

23 August, 12pm - 1:30pm

  • Old Cork Prison Gates
  • Thomas Kent Park
  • N/A
  • Co. Cork City

The host of Undercover Irish, Eolan Ryng presents an interactive and accessible talk on the history of Cork’s Military Detention Barracks. With plans currently lodged for the demolition of this building, this is truly “Heritage At Risk”.

The role played by Cork in Ireland’s Revolutionary Past cannot be underestimated. This site was the only place outside of Dublin on the island where anyone was executed for their role in the 1916 Rising. It holds its place as a core part of Ireland’s history and showcases the rebel spirit of those in Cork and Munster who fought for Irish Freedom.

From a prison break-in to Tomas MacCurtain’s stay, this talk will cover the history of a building that links key events in Cork’s struggle for independence. Like Kilmainham Gaol, the Old Cork Prison tells the tale of Ireland and Cork during some of the most difficult periods of our history.
Using the words of Tomas MacCurtain, one of Cork’s most important Ard Mhéara, and of those who spent time in the building, Eolan will bring us on a journey through Ireland’s history and Cork’s role while cementing the Old Prison as Cork’s Kilmainham.
