Transports: History of the Boats on the island- Mickey Rodgers

21 August, 4pm - 5pm

  • Day centre
  • west town tory island
  • Co. Donegal

This talk will explore the history of transport on Tory Island and the central role that boats have played in the lives of islanders.
Before modern transport links, boats were the essential connection between Tory Island and the mainland, carrying people, supplies, and news across the Atlantic.

The sea shaped everyday life, influencing how people travelled, traded, worked, and maintained relationships with the outside world.
Through personal memories and historical accounts, Mickey Rodgers will share stories of the boats that served the island, the challenges of Atlantic crossings, and the changing ways in which islanders have travelled over generations. This presentation offers a glimpse into a way of life where knowledge of the sea, boats, and weather was essential for the survival and identity of the community.
