  • Co. Donegal

Step back in time and witness the artistry of two time-honored crafts in this hands-on Traditional Skills Demonstration featuring Woodturning and Blacksmithing.

Woodturning
Woodturning is a craft where a piece of fallen tree is reworked into a usable piece to give a fallen tree a new life. Brian Laverty makes pens, bowls, candle sticks, lamps, decorative bowls, and traditional wedding goblets. Brian teaches on either a one to one basis and in a group within the Men's sheds. Learn about the types of wood used, traditional techniques, and the rich heritage of woodcraft passed down through generations.

Blacksmithing
Feel the heat and hear the ring of hammer on anvil as skilled blacksmiths bring iron to life. From forging hooks and hinges to shaping tools and ornamental designs, you’ll get an up-close look at the techniques that have supported communities for centuries. Discover how blacksmiths control fire, metal, and muscle to create both practical and artistic pieces.
Charlie Gallagher is an Artist and blacksmith based in Manorcunningham Co Donegal.

His display will feature the techniques of forging indigenous Irish knives as well as traditional hardware such as door hinges and fireside pokers. He will be available for questions throughout the event.

This interactive demonstration offers a rare opportunity to experience the craftsmanship and dedication behind these trades. Perfect for history enthusiasts, makers, and families alike—come with questions and curiosity!
