The Ballitore Quaker Burial Ground dating from circa 1743 is being restored and by popular demand we are again offering guided tours of this little gem and time capsule of history on the two Saturdays of Heritage Week. Access is across a meadow and you will learn the history of the burial ground and see graves of the Shackletons, including the grandparents of Antarctic Explorer Ernest Shackleton, the Leadbeaters, and Abel Strettel, one of the first Quaker settlers in Ballitore.
The tours, lasting about 40 to 50 minutes, will be led by a qualified guide and historian and restricted to small numbers. Bookings can be made by texting "Quaker Burial Ground" to 087 2421249 and we will get back to you.
You will walk across a meadow of long grass so wellington boots are recommended, especially in damp weather.
