Join us for a fascinating exploration of the historic textile and fashion collections preserved at Birr Castle Demesne.

Taking place in the Copper Tree Gallery on the 15 & 16 August 2026 during Heritage Week 2026, this free talk is suitable for ages 12+.

Drawing on over four centuries of family archives, the talk will reveal how clothing, photographs, letters and personal papers help tell the story of life at Birr Castle across generations. Highlights include a collection of rare 1930s gowns belonging to Anne, Countess of Rosse (1902–1992), including designs by renowned couturier Charles James.

This talk will also explore the conservation and cataloguing of these remarkable garments, made possible through funding from the Irish Heritage Council, and uncover the stories of fashion, family history and archival discovery hidden within the collection. The conservation of an early example of the Order of St Patrick will also be discussed, offering insight into the ceremonial and political history of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy.

The talk will last approximately 40 minutes, followed by an opportunity for questions.
Please note that food and drink are not permitted in the gallery.

Spaces are limited, and advance booking is recommended.
