"The Museum That Joe Built" is a short, independently produced documentary that shines a light on the life of Joe Whelan of Kilrush, County Clare — a remarkable man with an extraordinary devotion to Irish history and agricultural nostalgia.

Driven by curiosity, care, and a deep respect for the past, Joe has amassed a vast collection of agricultural tools, everyday artifacts, and most importantly, the stories that surround them.

The Museum of Rural Irish life, Kilrush, Co Clare traces the lives of people, places, and objects that shaped rural Irish life across the agricultural and industrial revolutions, capturing a way of life that is rapidly fading from living memory.

This is a story about custodianship — about how individuals like Joe quietly preserve Ireland’s cultural heritage, safeguarding the rhythms, labour, and ingenuity that form the backbone of the nation’s identity.

In celebrating Joe’s work, the film honours rural life as a vital and enduring part of Irish culture.
