The Leitrim Community Holy Wells Project 2026

Join Archaeologist Alva Mac Gowan and historian John Cronin from Archaeology Plan and learn about the Holy Wells of Co. Leitrim. The talk will share the results of a recent county-wide field survey of Leitrim's Holy Wells and explore the origins, names, associated rituals, healing and folklore associated with these culturally important sites.

Community involvement has been an important part of this initiative, project volunteers have proven invaluable in collecting local knowledge associated with the wells. We would also welcome members of the public to share any stories they may have about local Holy Wells after the talk.

The Leitrim Community Holy Well Project embodies this year's theme, "Heritage at Risk" which encourages us to explore the built, natural and cultural aspects of our heritage that are endangered, for us to reimagine and revive these sites, artefacts and practices.

The Leitrim Community Holy Wells Project (2026) is a community heritage initiative co-ordinated by Archaeology Plan and funded by Leitrim County Council.

This is a free event and does not require booking. Free on street parking is available.

Please note: at 2pm on Saturday the 22nd of August, join us for a pilgrimage to St. Brigid's Well (GREAGHNAFARNA townland). We are meeting at the carpark next to St. Hugh’s Church, Drumnafinnila for a 2km roundtrip to a lesser known holy well site (bring walking shoes /wellies). This is listed as a separate event on the Heritage Week website.
