Conservation of Abbey Assaroe Tour

The ongoing conservation works at Abbey Assaroe in Ballyshannon will be celebrated on Sunday 16th August 2026.

Founded in 1178 by Cistercian Monks this highly significant National Monument has played a pivotal role in the regions history over the centuries but has fallen into decline from the 17th Century. Since 2022 the Ballyshannon Regeneration Group have worked to conserve the remaining sections of the ruined Abbey walls.

Working with landowners, Donegal County Council Heritage office, National Monuments, and Dedalus Architecture, the BRG secured funding through the Community Monuments Fund to plan and undertake the project.

Project Consultant Archaeologist, Richard Crumlish, will deliver a talk and tour of the site and invite discussion on the project. The beautiful Abbey Mill complex will be the venue for a cuppa and a slideshow of the project progress.

Meeting point is the entrance to the Abbey Graveyard at 3pm where there is sufficient car-parking. The event is suitable for heritage fans of all ages. Expect a short walk and some uneven ground in parts, so suitable foot wear and clothing are important.
