The Butler Prisage of Wine, and Other Boozy Stories

24 August, 3pm - 4pm

  • Ormond Castle, Carrick-on-Suir
  • Castle Park, Carrick-on-Suir
  • E32CX59
  • Co. Tipperary

Join Ormond Castle Guide, Julie Ward for an exploration of the Butler Prisage of Wine, the entitlement held by the Butler Family to collect the tax on any wine imported into Ireland. As unpopular as it was, the Prisage was held by The Butlers from 1327, to the 19th century, when it was bought back by the British Crown in 1800, for £216,000 (c €20 million)

Julie will also look at other alcoholic drinks that were popular in Medieval times, like Mead, Cider and Piment, a spiced wine that aided digestion.

Finishing with The Irish Wine Geese, the Irish in exile families, who migrated to France during the 17th and 18th centuries, and became an integral part of the French wine industry.
