Talk on Galway Poor Law Unions
The Galway County Council Archives holds materials from eight of the ten Poor Law Unions established in the county during the 19th century. These collections are invaluable for those interested in administrative, social, medical, and local history.
Historian Mary Clancy will provide an overview of the Unions' functions and the significance of digitised archives. She will also discuss insights gained from the minutes of the Board of Guardians meetings and offer brief biographies of selected Guardians, as well as individuals associated with and employed by the workhouse.
The minutes from the Loughrea Poor Law Union, covering the years 1868 to 1899, are currently being digitised. This project is funded by the Heritage Stewardship Fund 2025.
As places are limited, booking is essential. For inquiries, please contact archivist@galwaycoco.ie.
