Talk on Franciscan Friary in Ballymote. Co. Sligo
16 August, 2pm - 3pm
- Meet in the Catholic Church car park in Ballymote.
- Church Street . Ballymote. Co Sligo
- Co. Sligo
In keeping with the National Heritage Week theme, we are having a talk on the Friary, Ballymote. As with all buildings , the Friary is vulnerable to climate related impacts such as extreme weather events. Therefore, it is important to keep the knowledge we have about these buildings for future generations. By holding this talk we hope to highlight the historical importance of the Friary and to preserve it for the future.
The Friary was founded in Ballymote in 1442, by three brothers: Patrick, Andrew and Phillip O'Coleman.
The Chieftain of Corran, McDonagh, in whose barony, Ballymote was situated gave the Franciscans his patronage.
We are honoured to have Dr. Yvonne McDermott from ATU, Castlebar, giving the talk. Yvonne lectures in History and Geography in ATU, Castlebar and is widely known for her knowledge and expertise on the Friary in Ballymote.
There will be an opportunity at the end of Yvonne's talk for a question and answer session.
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear about this building and it's importance in the history of Ballymote and surrounding countryside. All are welcome.
