St. George's Graveyard: Unlocking a Hidden Heritage

Having been closed to routine visitation for many decades, the Parish of St. George and St. Thomas is delighted to reintroduce this graveyard to the communities of Drumcondra, Dublin, and beyond.

Laid out in 1817 on lands that had been donated by Luke Gardiner, 1st Viscount Mountjoy and consecrated in 1824, St. George’s Graveyard and its environs has a distinctive place in the history of our city and our nation. At rest here are such notables as:
- Architect Francis Johnston whose signature works include the GPO and St. George’s Church, on Hardwicke Place
- Surgeon Richard Carmichael founder of the Carmichael School of Medicine, now amalgamated with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
- Members of the Hutton coachbuilding family, who designed and built for the aristocracy and which included Annie Hutton, fiancé of Young Irelander Thomas Davis
The adjacent land was the temporary location for St. George’s Church of which James Joyce wrote. Later the church site was developed to become a Fever Hospital and then Drumcondra Hospital.
We hope to make this unique space available with sensitivity, curiosity, and thoughtfulness as we welcome you. We look forward to sharing more about St. George’s and how, with the spirit of the meitheal as our guide, we are approaching our work in making it accessible.
