Treasure trail, Tea, Talk and Tunes takes place at St Carthage's Cathedral, Lismore on Friday 22nd August from 11.00am to 4.00pm as part of National Heritage Week.
The events celebrates the architectural, cultural and natural heritage of one of Ireland's most important medieval cathedrals and offers visitors an opportunity to explore the building and its grounds.
The programme includes an official opening by the Mayor and invited guests, guided tours with the Dean, live music by local musicians and homemade refreshments throughout the day. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the Cathedral, its place in the local community and the ongoing work to preserve this important landmark.
Families are invited to take part in a children's heritage and wildlife trail in and around the cathedral grounds. The Treasure hunt will encourage young visitors to look closely at the biodiversity found in historic churchyards, from woodlice and beetles to birds, mosses and lichens. The trail outside promotes a simple conversation message - draw it, don't pick it; look, don't lift it; leave no trace.
Participants will be encouraged to respect the cathedral grounds and leave plants, wildlife and historic features undisturbed.
Homemade cakes and tea will be served during the event, with a suggested donation of €5 towards the Cathedral Restoration Fund.
A professional photographer will document families enjoying the day.
Visitors will have the chance to support the preservation St Carthage's Cathedral, a historic community landmark.
