From basic necessity and cottage industry to modern ‘fast fashion’ and synthetics, the use of wool to keep us warm goes back to ancient times. Sheep thrive in the conditions that exist throughout the country, making the raw material easily available.

This demonstration will include explaining the preparation of the fleece for spinning ,cleaning andcarding and using a modern spinning wheel, or a handheld spindle. The spun yarn can be plied to create different thickness and mixed with other fibres, for various types of knitting or for weaving.
Naturally occurring dyes were used before industrialisation, and vegetation, roots ,herbs and berries commonly used.
Spinning continues to intrigue and fascinate, with individuals and groups throughout the country keeping the craft alive.
