As part of Heritage Week 2025, award-winning playwright Lee Coffey and director Aaron Monaghan reflect on their production Slice, the Thief, produced for the ports Pumphouse Presents programme. Known for his fast-paced, emotionally charged writing, Coffey gives voice to the lives and struggles of working-class Dubliners through rich character studies and raw, rhythmically driven storytelling.
Slice, The Thief introduces audiences to a fast-talking bicycle thief navigating the dark corners of the city. A one-man show performed with intensity and swagger, it showcases Coffey’s gift for language and rhythm, even as it explores a world of violence, ego, and vulnerability. This lecture offers a unique insight into Coffey’s and Monaghan’s creative process and the city that informs it: a city of grit, wit, and enduring humanity.
